The best time to visit Machu Picchu is generally during the dry season, which spans from May to September. This period offers more stable weather and clearer skies, providing better visibility for enjoying the breathtaking views of the site. June to August is the peak tourist season, so while the weather is pleasant, there may be larger crowds.

Alternatively, the shoulder months of April and October can also be good options. These months still offer relatively dry weather, but with fewer visitors compared to the peak season.

Keep in mind that Machu Picchu is a popular destination year-round, so it’s a good idea to plan and book your visit in advance, regardless of the time of year. Ultimately, the best time to go depends on your preferences for weather, crowd size, and overall experience.

Machu Picchu is generally accessible to a wide range of fitness levels, offering paved walkways at the main site that are suitable for most visitors. However, certain factors should be considered. While the main site itself is manageable, hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain involve steeper ascents and demand a higher level of fitness. It’s important to be aware of the site’s altitude, around 2,430 meters (7,970 feet), as altitude sickness can affect individuals differently. Proper acclimatization is advised.

The altitude of Machu Picchu is approximately 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level. Being at this elevation can potentially lead to altitude-related discomfort, also known as altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS). Here’s how you can prepare for the altitude when visiting Machu Picchu:

  1. Acclimatization: If possible, spend a day or two in Cusco or a nearby area before visiting Machu Picchu. This gradual acclimatization helps your body adjust to the altitude.

  2. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine.

  3. Light Meals: Consume light meals that are easy to digest. Avoid heavy, rich foods.

  4. Rest: Get enough sleep and take it easy during the first day at high altitude.

  5. Slow Pacing: Take your time when walking and climbing stairs. Allow yourself to rest as needed.

By taking these precautions and listening to your body, you can help minimize the effects of altitude and fully enjoy your visit to Machu Picchu.
