Itinerary
Early in the morning, our local guide and our Andean Q’eros Shaman will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and set off towards the mountains. We usually pick you up at 4 am, which is recommended, but we can also modify this since it is a private tour. After a three-hour ride, we will stop in the town of Cusipata for breakfast. Then we will make our way to the trailhead, ready to embark on a hike that leads us through approximately 3 kilometers (1.5 hours) of gradually ascending terrain. This path leads to the summit of the illustrious “Rainbow Mountain,” a true marvel of nature.
Along the way, you’ll be treated to panoramic vistas of sprawling valleys, the grace of wild llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, as well as the timeless beauty of the Andes and its neighboring glaciers. Upon arrival, we will have enough time to take photos and enjoy the views. Depending on you and the weather conditions, we can even hike for 1-2 more hours along the red valley. We will participate in a Energetic Cleansing Ceremony, which is a beautiful ceremony of healing and forgiveness, guided by our shaman, set against the backdrop of the stunning and vibrant mountains.
Later, we return back to the starting point and then drive to the local restaurant for lunch. We drive back to Cusco with our private transportation and arrive there in the early evening.

FAQ about the Rainbow Mountain
Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca or Montaña de Siete Colores, is a natural wonder located in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It’s famous for its vibrant and multicolored striped appearance.
The colorful stripes on Rainbow Mountain are primarily formed by the oxidation of different minerals, which give rise to distinct colors. Here’s a breakdown of the process:
Mineral Deposits: The mountain’s diverse colors come from different mineral deposits that have accumulated over millions of years. These deposits include iron, copper, sulfur, and other minerals that contain various pigments.
Oxidation and Weathering: Over time, these minerals underwent processes of oxidation and weathering. Oxygen and other atmospheric elements reacted with the minerals, causing them to break down and transform into new compounds.
Chemical Reactions: The oxidation of minerals led to the creation of colorful compounds. For example, iron-rich minerals can turn into iron oxide, also known as rust, which can manifest in red, orange, and brown hues. Copper-rich minerals can produce blue and green colors.
Layering: The different mineral-rich layers were deposited over time in distinct geological eras. As these layers were uplifted and exposed due to tectonic activity, erosion played a role in revealing the various colorful bands that we see today.
Altitude and Exposure: The high-altitude environment of Rainbow Mountain has played a part in preserving these vibrant colors. The relatively harsh climate, with its exposure to UV radiation and temperature fluctuations, has contributed to the preservation of the minerals’ unique colors.
It’s important to note that the colors might vary depending on the lighting conditions, time of day, and even weather conditions.
The hike to Rainbow Mountain can indeed be challenging due to several factors, primarily the high altitude and the steep terrain. It’s important to be adequately prepared both physically and mentally before attempting the hike.
One of the main challenges of the hike is the high altitude. The trail reaches elevations above 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), and the starting point itself is already significantly higher than Cusco. Altitude sickness, or soroche as it’s known locally, is a genuine concern. To mitigate this, it’s recommended that visitors spend at least a couple of days acclimating to the altitude in Cusco before attempting the hike. This helps your body adjust to the lower oxygen levels and reduces the risk of altitude-related symptoms.
The hike is also physically demanding due to the steep inclines and varying trail conditions. While the distance is not extremely long, the altitude can make it feel more challenging than expected.
Wear comfortable hiking clothes in layers, sturdy hiking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and carry a backpack with water, snacks, and a camera.
The hike to Rainbow Mountain can take around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level.
Yes! If you find it challenging to complete the entire hike, there are options to rent horses or mules for assistance. If you’re considering this, it’s advisable to bring some cash in soles with you.
